I have known the great Allen J. Miller for about the past decade. I came across Allen as I was running a few art shows featuring local artists. Even ten years ago I loved his photographs so much that I featured him in the show (to this day I consider Allen’s photographs at my house a part of my personal art collection).
We met at strange critical times in both of our lives. Allen was coming out of the fog of personal demons and I was morphing into an actual “adult”. Needless to say, we were instantaneous friends; perhaps by our circumstances or that we are simply that kick-ass.
Allen is a wonderful human. I appreciate many things about him, but I have always loved that we share a mutual admiration of all art—even the non-traditional, slightly whacky kind. I think his most admirable attribute is his fierce “brother-bear” love for the people he loves. I’ve always been drawn me to this dude, is his free-spirit, and vagabond lifestyle. Allen doesn’t just talk about being a bohemian, he embodies every aspect of the life. I know he is ALWAYS down for an adventure. I hope to see Allen in the future in some random bar in south Louisiana, traveling from separate worlds; buying a plane ticket on a whim and meeting over a case of beer, and telling great stories.

It’s been nearly 15 years since I first saw one of Allen’s images online, an apocalyptic Southwestern landscape that boggled and entranced my Yankee eyes. At the time, Allen was experimenting with desaturated landscapes, but he has continued to evolve his craft steadily over the course of, well, what feels like forever.
I will never forget the awe I felt upon viewing Allen’s shot of an old stone tower on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, standing tall against a lush blue sky. Allen has several different versions of that shot in his portfolio, and they’ve each had a myriad of titles, but I will never forget my first time laying eyes on that particular image and realizing how far his photography had come – and how far he would go.
This is just a taste of our Allen J Miller gallery in our home office, we have six prints in this room. I honestly think the room needs at least two more! My favorite thing about Allen’s work is the fact he can capture beauty in things that most take for granted!
